Central Campus

ISU is located in Strasbourg, Alsace, in North East France, and is bordered by the Rhine River to the East, the Vosges mountains to the West, the German plain to the North and the Territoire de Belfort to the South. Strasbourg is the European Capital and lies along the Rhine River, the natural border between France and Germany. It is home of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights. The city numbers approximately 256,000 inhabitants with a further 200,000 inhabitants in the suburbs which make up the Strasbourg Eurometropolis.

ISU Facilities

The ISU Central Campus offers educational infrastructure as hands-on training possibilities for students: a radio telescope and optical telescopes, a satellite ground station, a concurrent engineering facility, an Excalibur Almaz reusable orbital science spacecraft, a Self-deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments (SHEE), a space payloads lab and a life sciences lab.

Some of these tools were donated by the European Space Agency (ESA), highlighting the agency’s strong support of ISU.

Coming to ISU

The ISU Central Campus is located in the Parc d’Innovation at Illkirch-Graffenstaden, a town in the southern part of the Strasbourg Eurometropolis. It is about 15 minutes from the center of Strasbourg by car, 30-35 minutes by public transport.

Strasbourg’s International Airport (SXB) is located in Entzheim (15 km South-West of the city-centre). From Entzheim International Airport, it takes about 15-20 minutes by car/taxi. From the airport, a taxi will cost approximately 25- 30 euros (rates are at the higher end at night, or during the weekend/holidays). There is a train shuttle to Strasbourg 4 times per hour; it takes 9 minutes to reach Strasbourg train station.

Frankfurt (FRA), is 2,5hours away using the Lufthansa shuttle service.

Zürich (ZRH) International Airports and Paris (CDG) are both a two hour rail-ride away from Strasbourg.

The Euroairport in Basel-Mulhouse, located an hour away, make Strasbourg even more accessible.

Strasbourg Central Station is located near the center of Strasbourg, and is linked with the city’s Tram. By car

Strasbourg lies between two major highways. The A4 from Paris, Metz, Nancy and Luxembourg from the west, which turns into the A35 from Dijon and Mulhouse from the south.
The second highway is the A5 (also labeled E35 and E52), and is the major axis between Frankfurt, Germany and Basel, Switzerland. This highway passes 17 kilometers east of Strasbourg.

From the center of Strasbourg, take the A35 (highway) south direction Colmar.

From the airport, take the same highway (A35) north, direction Strasbourg.

From either direction take exit 5, Illkirch Baggersee. At the traffic lights, go straight and continue straight until you reach the roundabout. At the roundabout take the 4th exit into the Parc d’Innovation. Continue on Blvd. S. Brant until you reach the next roundabout. There take the first right, you will see the ISU campus on your right. Take the first right (the 7 Hotel will now be on your left), two more right turns and you are in the ISU car-park.

By public transport

The tram runs from 4:30a.m. to 0:30 a.m., with one tram every four minutes at peak hours. To get to ISU take Tram “A” from the railway station or from city center, direction Illkirch, and get off at the Campus d’Illkirch station (next to McDonalds’). Turn left (opposite direction from continuing tram journey) and walk to the roundabout, cross over to the opposite side. (The building on your left is the Pole API.) Continue for about 5 meters on Blvd. S. Brant , cross the street to get to the pedestrian path adjacent to the ISU campus, which should be visible on your right. From the tram stop, please follow the dotted line on the map below to access the campus.
