Alumni Representative

Soyeon Yi, SSP09

The International Space University is pleased to announce that Soyeon Yi (SSP09) has been elected as the new Alumni representative, with 291 votes out of 450. Many thanks again to all those who voted and to all the 14 nominees, in particular to the second finalist Halit Mirahmetoglu (SSP07, MSM09). In order to best serve the ISU alumni community, Soyeon, Halit and ISU have agreed that as of 15 November 2019, Halit will be Deputy Alumni representative. In his role, Halit will assist Soyeon in her various duties, including being her back-up at Board of Trustees meetings.

Soyeon is an astronaut and biotechnologist who became the first Korean to fly in space. Upon return from her mission aboard the ISS, Yi continued as a KARI researcher attending the International Space University before retiring from the agency to pursue an MBA at the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business and joining commercial astronaut corps the Association of Spaceflight Professionals.

Soyeon said:

“… Therefore I realized that I needed to study about space, which led me to the International Space University (ISU) Space Studies Program (SSP). During the SSP, I worked with space professionals from all over the world and learned various space things. I had a wonderful time at ISU. It was incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally and I have made many new friends.”

ISU extends its renewed thanks to outgoing representative Julio Aprea (MSS05).

Best wishes to Soyeon as we welcome her as new ISU alumni representative, and look ahead to the coming years.
