As part of the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg’s partnership agreement with the French Space Agency CNES and its motivation to support the development of a local space industry based on space applications, the Eurometropolis and CNES recently organized – in collaboration with the International Space University (ISU) – a unique half-day of training for public authorities focused on the use of data and technologies coming from the space sector.
The objective of this Masterclass was to demonstrate the usefulness of space data to support the implementation of public policies in various fields such as mobility, health, environment, urban planning… ISU President Pascale Ehrenfreund, Eurometropolis of Strasbourg Vice-President in charge of higher education, research, student life, and innovation Caroline Zorn and CNES innovation director Gilles Rabin welcomed participants to this ConnectbyCNES masterclass hosted at ISU. This Masterclass also offered the opportunity to share issues between the participants consisting of elected officials and community officials of the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg. They learned about CNES and ConnectbyCNES services, the use of space data, space applications, how space can help citizens, from a panel of CNES experts:
– Frédéric Adragna: advisor in economic development and space solutions, CNES
– Thierry Chapuis: space applications expert, CNES
– Marie-Laure Gouzy: space health, MEDES/CNES
– Hélène De Boisseson: engineer use of space, CNES
– Jean-Marc Delvit: head of CNES EO-lab
Nicolas Peter – Prof. of the Practice in Space Policy and International Affairs at ISU – shared his experience with the audience on using space, and in particular downstream activities to support public policies and answered questions related to ISU and its role at both local and international levels.
The audience got acquainted with more experts and entrepreneurs, from two start-ups incubated at ISU, namely Watershed Monitoring and Terremys. They each gave a 10-minute pitch under the supervision of the moderator of this event – Hervé Krieger, head of mobility and space at the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg.
ConnectbyCNES together with partners like the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg or the International Space University, amongst many others, contribute to space capacity building and organize several events including ActInSpace, hackathonsen, start-up weekends, challenges which generate new ideas and transform them into future projects. Those are also opportunities for start-ups, SME/mid-tier companies, large groups, or local authorities to harness space technologies for their projects and for the benefit of the society.
